CorkeenĀ® Playground Surfacing

Sustainable, Safe & Natural Cork Playground Safety Surfacing

Create healthier, safer, and more sustainable outdoor play environments with Corkeen® Playground Surfacing. Developed by Corkeen by Amorim, one of the world's leading cork manufacturers with more than 150 years of cork expertise, Corkeen transforms renewable cork into a premium poured-in-place playground safety surface that combines outstanding fall protection with exceptional environmental performance.

Unlike traditional rubber safety surfacing, Corkeen utilizes the natural properties of cork to provide a cooler, softer, and more environmentally responsible surface that allows children to play comfortably while supporting sustainable building initiatives.

What is Corkeen?

Corkeen is an innovative two-layer, poured-in-place playground surfacing system manufactured primarily from engineered natural cork granules. The system consists of flexible shock-absorbing base layer and a durable wear-resistant top layer.

Both layers are composed of natural cork granules bonded together using a polyurethane-based resin, creating a seamless safety surface designed for playgrounds, parks, schools, childcare centers, recreational spaces, and community play areas.

The Corkeen Play Original system is naturally colored, requiring no added pigments, and is specifically engineered to deliver long-lasting performance while maintaining excellent impact attenuation and drainage. The product sheet notes that it is an on-site installed, highly water-permeable system made from 100% natural cork granules bonded with PU resin.

Sustainable from Forest to Playground

One of Corkeen's greatest advantages is that sustainability is built into every stage of production.

The cork used in Corkeen comes from the bark of Cork Oak trees (Quercus Suber). Rather than cutting down the tree, skilled harvesters carefully remove only the outer bark approximately every nine years, allowing the tree to regenerate naturally for future harvests. Throughout its lifetime, the tree continues absorbing carbon dioxide while producing new bark.

Because no trees are felled during harvesting, cork is considered one of the world's most renewable building materials.

Designed for Children's Safety

Playground surfacing exists to reduce injury, and Corkeen was engineered specifically for this purpose.

Its dual-layer construction absorbs impact while maintaining structural integrity over years of use. The flexible base cushions falls while the upper layer resists wear, creating consistent protection across the entire playground.

Corkeen complies with major international playground safety standards.

The surface has also been tested for abrasion resistance, fire performance, and slip resistance.
